Cocoa producers supported by TDC present their initiatives against child labor during Belgian Economic Mission in Ivory Coast

During the Belgian Economic Mission at the end of October in Abidjan under the leadership of HRH Princess Astrid, the Belgian Embassy jointly with the Office of the 1st Lady of Ivory Coast organized the seminar "Human Rights and the Private Sector: Prevention and Abolition of Child Labor in the Cocoa Supply Chain".The Belgian Embassy wanted to invite cocoa cooperatives supported by BTC, so that these producers could be represented next to official delegations, industrials and multilaterals. Therefore they called upon the Trade for Development Centre that is supporting cocoa producer’ organisations with marketing support in the country. 

All the cooperatives accompanied by the TDC responded to the invitation and attended the seminar. Three of them took the floor to present their initiatives in the fight against child labor. National public authorities and international organizations presented their action plans and the priorities of major buyers of cocoa were also discussed.

In total, 250 people were present from the official delegation of Ivory Coast, Belgium and the European embassies, the European Union, the African Union, the Coffee-Cacao Council, the World Cocoa Foundation, ILO, UNICEF, and the industry (Mondelez, Mars, Nestle, Ferrero, Barry-Callebaut, Cargill, Olam ...).
